Choosing the right pet is a big decision, and if you’re trying to decide between cats or dogs, there are a lot of factors that come into play.
Of course, you can have one of each – in spite of popular belief, cats and dogs can live quite happily together! But if you can only choose one, here are a few pointers to help you decide.
What’s your lifestyle like?
Cats and dogs are quite different in nature – dogs are pack animals that crave company and need regular walks. Cats, while they can be loving and affectionate, are more independent and self-sufficient and can live happily on their own.
Dogs can find it stressful being left along for long periods of time, which means if you travel a lot, a dog might not be the best option for you. They also require regular exercise, so they are best suited to those who are able to commit the time to walk them every day.
On the other hand, dogs can be a great fit for people with an active lifestyle, and they are very sociable, so you’ll get plenty of love from them.
What are your living arrangements?
Your living arrangements are another factor that will come into play when you’re deciding what type of pet to get. Dogs tend to need more space than cats, and while you can have a dog in an apartment, it’s not always practical. Dog ownership is going to be a lot easier if you have a decent-sized place with a backyard or nearby dog park.
Cats can live quite happily in smaller apartments, as they get most of their exercise through play, and some cats are quite happy to live exclusively indoors.
How much time do you have available?
Because of the fact they need walking and lots of love and attention, dogs are generally more time consuming than cats. The payoff is that you’ll get a loving, loyal pet that showers you with adoration when you come home every day.
Cats are lower maintenance and better for people who have less spare time, but they can be more standoffish and they probably won’t be quite as overjoyed to see you when you get home.
Will cost be an issue?
If cost is an issue for you, you may want to consider getting a cat over a dog. As a rule, dogs are more expensive than cats, as you have to factor in greater food costs, training and other costs like doggy day care.
Cats and dogs also have very different personalities. It's worth considering how each might fit into your family. Dogs are generally more loving and loyal, while cats suit those who want the companionship of a pet, but don’t want one that’s solely reliant on them for everything.
The best way to decide is to spend some time with both cats and dogs, through pet sitting or visiting a local animal shelter, and see which one you feel the most comfortable around.
