Close to half of Australian households have a dog. So it’s no secret that they’re a pup-ular housemate.
But have you ever seen dogs trot down the footpath or race around the dog park, and wondered… what are the most common?
We know every breed is special. But in 2024, there are a handful of tail-waggers that are particularly favourable amongst us Aussies.
And we’re counting down the top 10. So dig in and find out if your pup (or future pup) has made the list.
(Watch out: some of these breeds might be devising a plan to take over the local dog park… very soon.)
10. Spoodle
Active, affectionate, attention-hogs
Coming in at number 10 is the Spoodle (aka Cockapoo).
A cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, Spoodles make for handsome, happy hounds. And with their ‘shaggy hair, don’t care’ attitude, they rock a healthy coat without shedding. Perfect for owners with allergies.
You may have also heard Spoodles are oodles of fun. It’s true! So get ready to play peekaboo with your Cockapoo!
9. Groodle
Clever, caring, chaotic
If you’re looking for your new best fur-end, look no further than a Golden Doodle (also known as a Groodle)!

So if you or anyone in your family’s sinus sensitivities are keeping your pet picking on a tight leash, consider a Groodle.
8. Dachshund
Daring, determined, devoted
These little sausage dogs have wiggled their way into the hearts of many Australians. Their unique shape and bold personality make them an irresistible companion.

But keep in mind: while their protective nature makes them a family favourite, they can become overprotective. Make sure you train them to only greet children and other animals with a polite “guten tag”.
4. Australian Shepherd
Adventurous, animated, affectionate
Australian Shepherds, often known as "Aussies", are not originally from Australia, but they have certainly become a beloved breed down under.

2. Golden Retriever
Gentle, gorgeous, goofy
Someone call Sherlock Bones! We’ve got a case. The suspect is a four-legged friend who makes people laugh, sticks by their side, and loves them unconditionally.
