It’s a doggy date! The best dog-friendly cafes and more on Melbourne’s North side

Beer gardens, food truck parks, cafés and cosy bars. When it comes to food, drinks and good times, there’s a lot Melbourne’s North has to offer.

But what makes it all that little bit tastier? Having your pup by your side!

That’s why we’ve done the real-world research to bring you our hot spot dog spots.

Vincent the Dog

‘Oh, this café is named after a dog called Vincent!’ we hear you think.

Actually no, not quite. The original owner’s name is Vincent. And he worked like a dog to get his dream café up and running, one that does good coffee and even better food.

So what about the real dogs – do they get left out? Nope. You and your furry friend will be warmly welcomed by resident pooch, Ruby. (Unless she’s lying at another customer's feet.)

Doghouse Café

A café for dogs? Where humans are welcome? Way to twist the narrative!

Doghouse Australia was founded on the idea that our canine friends deserve to enjoy life’s pleasures – just as much as we do.

That means their menu is chock full of doggy delights, such as raw meat, dog muffins and dogachinos.

And for their humans? Coffee or juice. After all, it’s all about the dogs.

Welcome to Thornbury

Dogs aren't just welcomed at this beer and food truck park… they’re encouraged!

As long as you follow a few house rules: Leads are a must. No pooping. And dogs need to stay outdoors only.

Welcome to Thornbury also promotes proper socialisation of dogs. So on the third Wednesday of every month, it’s Good Dogs of Darebin night! On the guest list are dog trainers, dog businesses and animal rescue groups. Oh and a lot of pupperinos.

Follow your nose to: 520 High Street, Northcote 3070

The Great Northern Hotel

How do you know that a place is really dedicated to being pet-friendly? When they have a separate Instagram account just for their doggy guests!

So go on, bring your famous furry friend to the Great Northern. They might just be snapped stretching their four legs in the spacious beer garden.

The Hotel wants your pooch to feel right at home, too. So there are water bowls, homemade treats and plenty of shade in the warmer months.

And they’ve even got a menu for humans, with classic pub favourites and an impressive beer list.

Follow your nose to: 644 Rathdowne Street, Carlton 3054

South of Johnston

A pet-friendly patio for relaxing in summer? Blankets to snuggle up with in winter?

South of Johnston offers premium puppy hospitality like no other.

Nicknamed ‘Sojo’, they do a delicious range of all-day breakfasts, brunches and lunches – all made with locally-sourced produce.

The café also has a huge focus on sustainability, using recycled materials and giving back to the community where they can.

The Farm Café

Let us set the scene: fresh air, beautiful scenery and a rustic meal.

No wonder The Farm Café at Collingwood Children’s Farm is one of Melbourne’s most popular dog (and family) friendly locations.

After a trot along the farm’s walking track, you and your dog will be ready for a pit stop. (Beware though: on a sunny day, the café can get extremely busy!)

Follow your nose to: 18 St Heliers St, Abbotsford 3067

Give them a woof on: 9415 6581

Monty’s Bar

It’s the deepest depths of winter, and all you want is a cosy spot, a wine in your hand and your pup at your feet. Is that so much to ask?

Nope! Monty’s Bar hears you. The place where dogs are welcome – inside and out.

And if you deserve a treat? You can order in from the bar’s next-door neighbours: Red Olive (pizza) and Just Falafs (falafels).

Follow your nose to: 209 St George's Rd, Fitzroy North 3068
